A soffit is the part of the roof structure from the wall to the gutter on the underside. Soffits can be closed or open. A closed soffit means you cant see the rafter tails. An open soffit is shown above, where you can see the rafter tails. Neither soffit style is better than the other, it is just dependent on the style of your home.
