How do erosion holes form and what can I do about them?

On a cedar shake roof, water travels down the roof in the key ways. The wood shake is the thinnest at the top of every key way. Direct sun exposure and water volume over the years will erode the shake. Usually in a tear drop shape and looks black from a roof top inspection. This type of decay is not detectable from the ground. The worn shake should be replaced, a metal shim can also be used.
